Chitwan National Park, one of the finest wildlife reserves in Asia, was declared a National Park in 1973. It is the most popular destination for tourists wanting to have a good experience of the region's wildlife. In 1984, UNESCO designated it as a Natural World Heritage Site. The Park offers protection to 50 species of mammals including the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal Tiger, leopard, sloth bear, wild elephant, striped hyena, Gangetic dolphin and wild bison. There are an estimated 50 species of mammals, over 526 species of birds, 126 species of fish, 150 species of butterflies and 49 species of reptiles in the park. The Park is spread over an area of 932 sq kms and located in the lowlands of the country. It is easily accessible, being conveniently situated close to Kathmandu (only 165km overland), and Bharatpur Airport, adjoining the Park, is a mere 25 minute flight away.
Jungle safaris include all ground transportation, a choice of accommodation, inside or outside of the National Park, three meals a day while in the Park and various jungle activities including, elephant-back rides or jeep drives, bird watching, jungle walks, canoe ride on the Rapti River to look for crocodiles, elephant breeding center village tour or, if you prefer, you can stay at the jungle lodge and just relax.
